Quilt for Cindy

Made this quilt for a girl who works with my oldest daughter Keri. She has terminal cancer :-(. Will bring it to her when she is having a good day.

I used Pieces 0' Cake design (free) called Simply Color and changed the borders. I quilted it as I went using an old method I use to use. I hope she likes it and that it gives her comfort.

This is a baby quilt I just did for some friends having a baby. Isn't the pattern adorable? I hand appliqued and hand quilted this in about two and a half weeks. Very quick easy pattern. Hope they like it, we are giving it to them tonight lol. If you double click the picture it will be bigger.

My new design wall

Here is a picture of part of my new design wall. I couldn't get far enough away to get it all lol.

It is 2 - 8x4 sheets of 1 " thick styrofoam insulation board taped together and covered with flannel. Since the flannel was on sale the whole thing was under 50 dollars wooohooo!

We did cut a foot off the 8' side cause I can't reach that high lol.

It is great having a daughter (two actually lol) who quilt. I now have one less ufo since one of them took one home with them. woohooo!

Remodeled Sewing Room

It is not quite finished, the track lighting and light box still have to be installed, and I need to make a final decision on a design wall. But the painting, except for a little touch up, and the flooring are all done! It is so light in here now, I just love it!

Ok here are pictures with descriptions.

This begins the after photos. This is the door to enter. I will eventually paint it but not sure what color.

This is the computer area. The shelf on the wall will be painted once the weather warms up and I can take it outside to paint.

This of course is the tv area and rest of the computer desk area.

This picture is for my sweet friend Deann, see the leg area is clear lol.

See the towel on the white table? That is the area the light box will be recessed into. I can't hardly wait! Once it is in I will take a picture.

Obviously this is the sewing and cutting area. See my friend Mrs Sewing Bear sitting on the little drawer unit?

The ironing board and where I hang bags. Ignore the ladder leaning against the shelves lol, once the track lighting is in it will be gone.

This is my 11 year old granddaughter Alexis and the first quilt she has ever made! She is giving it to a teacher who had a baby right before the holidays and will present it on Monday. I am so proud of her and the job she did (with a little help from Nana).

A very amazing and humble man

While at the Houston Quilt Show I spent a little time with a most amazing man. His name is Ricky Tims. I am sure most of you have heard of him. I saw him on Simply Quilts a few years ago and loved his easy going ways, both in attitude and quilting. He freed me up to know that it was ok to not always use a ruler. Amazingly freeing. But I digress. See what I found out after spending some time with him in Houston is how amazingly humble he is. And what an amazing musician he is. And how wonderful his hand dyed fabrics are when you see them in person. But as each new person came to the booth ( I helped cover his booth for short periods of time and also worked the cd table at his concert), I saw just how truly humble he is. That endeared me to him forever.

Now I would ask you to do something for me. Listen to the song (it is the title of the new cd) below. If you think it is as amazing as I do, then go to the website and order a copy for yourself and one or more for presents. Also check out the picture of me with Ricky. He was being silly for me and I have to tell you he is so much fun!

Dancing Flowers Quilt

I started this and did the top in 2006. Put the top on my (new then) floor hand quilting frame, did about 2-4 inches of quilting and then put the whole thing away till last week. Finished up the top, love the frame, and now it is happy hanging on my wall finally.

While my youngest daughter learned to quilt (and still does a little sometimes) while we were homeschooling, my other two daughters haven't really shown an interest. Well the oldest was living 900 miles away so that may have been part of it lol. Anyway Keri (oldest) has decided to try quilting. And she is loving it!! I am so happy. I want to know that someone in our family will continue to quilt after I am gone. There will be more babies as these grandchildren get older and they will need quilts!

Anyway here is a picture of one of the blocks she has machine appliqued. She is having a long time friend come in from out of town this weekend so we will be starting the quilting process next week. I will of course post a picture of the finished project as soon as it is done.

Let's Talk Applique!

As anyone who knows me knows, I adore applique! Especially hand applique! It is the reason I quilt.

Over the many years I have been quilting now (almost 20 wow!), I have tried to learn something new, or at least try a new method (to me anyway lol) every year. Over the many years I have tried many different ways to applique, both hand and machine. And I have incorporated a little from each method, well most methods into the way I applique now.

Recently an online friend (thanks Retta!) sent me some fabric and a little book by Ami Simms called Invisible Applique. I had never tried her method, and of course decided I had to try it lol. While her method of using the ladder stitch is not for me, I did learn (why I didn't think about it before is beyond me lol) a new way to make sure that intricate blocks like the Baltimore Blue and Christmas Windows blocks are stitched down right where the pieces need to go. I had made clear overlays and was doing it that way, but if you are familiar with the method, pieces can shift when you remove the overlay. So what I am doing now and it works wonderfully for me, is to use a blue water soluble marking pen, (be sure you read and see if you can iron over the markings, on some of the old kind you couldn't but the one I recently purchased there are no heat warnings) mark the entire block on the background fabric and then worry about one piece at a time. I like to iron the block multiple times before it is finished so that the pieces lay down flat as I add the next pieces. This pen has completely washed out with just a small paint brush and some room temperature water. And I have ironed the completed block and it has been over a week and the lines haven't reappeared on the back or front where I was "off" just a tad in some places.

On the Baltimore Blue block some pieces fit on top of others so I will use a marker to mark the underneath piece and sew that on (which I normally do anyway) then fit the bottom piece into the drawn background.

I was prepping templates and fabric for the rest of the Baltimore Blue blocks cause I had a dream a few nights ago that I didn't have enough fabric. Well the dream was right. I went to buy more fabric this morning and guess what? They don't have it anymore ! So since it is the greens, I bought what hopefully is enough to do the whole quilt, and I will remove the pieces on the first three blocks that are finished and put the new greens on. They are in the dryer right now. So I am off to remove the other pieces. Sigh. Such is the life of a quilter.

Another new project

Well as of right this moment I have 4 quilts going and 2 knitting projects. I know I am a glutton for punishment. But by having so many different things going I don't get bored. Right now I am hand appliquing three projects.

Well effective January 7th, 2009 I finished the dear jane. And yes I am glad lol. That quilt took me 11 months to do. I am ready for something else. I did work on the second hawaiian block and finished it yesterday. I will post the picture after this post. Now I am working on the second baltimore blue block.

We each do however many we want to do for the week, some are doing 1, some 3, and some 5. The scheduled chat to talk about them, or anything else you want to talk about is at 1 pm cst. There is a link to the chat or information on how to get there if you use mirc on the website I posted. Some of the ladies that come in are not doing the dear jane, but come in to just chat. We started with the easier blocks and I am now working on what the cd calls intermediate.

Last night I bought the sashing and cornerstones fabric for the front of the quilt. Also a fabric for the borders. And 6 of the 14 fabrics I will use on the back. Today I hope to find the other 8 fabrics for the backing and sashing, cornerstones, and border fabric for the back. I want the quilt to be reversible when it is done.

Know what that number means? Is it the number of the income tax form I fill out? Well actually it is lol. But in this case it is the number of pieces of fabric I have used so far making the Sylvia's Bridal Sampler Quilt lol.

There are a total of 140 blocks and I have completed 47 so far. Wonder how many pieces there are in all 140 blocks? Check back and see. I will try and update my count as I finish a row. I am 1/2 through row C right now.

My Package Arrived!!!

At the Quiltcampus birthday party Saturday night, (it is 2 years old !!) I got a door prize. It arrived today and here is the picture of everything I got. The fabric is a 1/2 of printed color bar. Isn't it wonderful? It will make great grass, leaves, trees, oh I can think of so many uses!!! And with a half yard I can use it alot lol.

And isn't the pattern adorable? I love her applique patterns.

My very first quilt!

Sorry I can't make the picture bigger or clearer. This quilt is for my youngest daughter Kaci. I started it many years ago and worked on it for quite a while. We found a kit of precut triangles that she liked the colors but not the pattern they had it in. Was sorta supposed to be a pinwheel. So I sewed all the triangles together and then made a kinda around the world, though at the time I had no clue that was what it was called lol. There are about 400 squares in this quilt made up of triangles. I hand quilted hearts in each of those blocks. It seemed like it took forever lol. I learned alot from doing this quilt though. And she really likes it so it was worth all the problems of putting those triangles together.

Just remember if my first quilt could be made from all triangles, you can do anything if you try !

This is a big wall hanging that I did at Quilt Campus as a Let's Applique. It is one of my favorites!

I love the bird! I hand appliqued and hand quilted it. I did a diagonal line across the center piece with the applique and then did a heart stencil in the blue borders.

If you are ever are looking for a wonderful quilting site to visit, hop on over to http://www.quiltcampus.net/. There is alot going on there. I am an op there in the live chat room. It is a safe fun place for chatting about quilting and there are many fun projects going on. There is Bingo, where you actually win fat quarters, Let's Applique, where you get free fun patterns and help with learning to applique, or just encouragement when you need it. Around November we do Bits and Pieces, that is where you send in pictures and updates of UFO's you have hanging around, earn points and possibly prizes. This month Quilt Campus is 2 years old! We are having a birthday party in the chat room. Click on over and read all about it. There will be prizes, and lots of fun. We chat about all kinds of things. When ever you are in the chat room (there is lots going on at the website, not just chatting) and see someone with an @ in front of their name, that indicates that an op is on duty. We keep the chat room safe from people who don't belong there. The room is rated G and we watch for people who would come in and disturb our chatters.

There is also quilt classes going on through the channel with nationally known teachers. Check it out and let me know how you like it.
